Benjamin van der Wel : It is wonderful to see how human these arguments are. Mozart faced these exact criticisms and questions when he changed music in Europe. And so did Debussy centuries later. The dynamics of it all is wonderful to me. Thank you everyone.

Jenny : my violin teacher always said, when you are learning, learn to be exact, but when performing, it's a bit like jazz where harmony and feel becomes more important

Esmeralda Herrero : I like the modern music and traditional qin music but it was modern music that first got me interested in the qin but I mostly play traditional scores now, so I agree with Alan in that modern music can make qin more reachable

Joshua Meschke : agreed, likewise it was modern scores that introduced me to the qin, which later led me to finding older/ more traditional scores.

João Oliveira : I agree, I also first got in contact with the qin due to modern music and I belive modern music is a very efficient way to spark the interest of someone who is not familiar with the instrument.

Anya Badaldavood : If you are using Zoom to teach, you can also put the students in breakout rooms for practice during the instances that you are teaching a group of students. As the host, you can visit the rooms or close them to have the students join the main session.

Marilyn W. : There is also a misnomer about what are “beginner pieces.” All qin pieces are a challenge, some are much longer than others. Even the “simplest” qin piece can be played a challenge to be played beautifully or poorly.

Maya Choi : The beauty in simplicity is most beautiful thing, I believe.

Alan Yip (US) - Dao Yi 搗衣 (Pounding Cloth)
* Dao Yi was composed during the Tang dynasty. In the cool autumn season, women in every family rush to make winter clothes for their loved ones, so they need to first wash and pounding the cloth. This music shows women's longing for their loved ones in the distance.

Esmeralda Herrero (Ireland) - Mei Hua San Nong 梅花三弄 (Three Variations on the Plum Blossom)
*From Wumen Qinpu

Jing Wang (UK) - Yue Ren Ge 越人歌 (Song of Yue Boatman)
*The lyrics is from an ancient Chinese poem around 528BC. see the lyrics of Yue Boatman. The qin melody is based on a movie music by Mr. Tan Dun and Mr. Yang Qing adopt on the guqin.

Jim Binkley (US) - Journey to Hawaii 逍遙遊
*Composed by Jim himself. To watch Jim's playing of the whole piece.

Juni L Yeung (Canada) -  Zhi Zhao Fei 鴙朝飛 (Pheasant's Morning Flight)
*In Wings Flapping a pheasant cooing in the morning to its mate reminds the narrator, a woman, of her lonely state. Courtesy to John Thompson's site.

Peiyou Chang (US) - Guang Ling San 廣陵散 (Short version)
*Guang Ling San (Song of Guang Ling) may have existed since the 1st to 3rd centuries or from the court music of Sui dynasty in the 6th century. Peiyou studied this piece from the Ming dynasty handbook, SQMP. It is a very long piece, with about 42 sections, and more than 20 minutes long, but she played a short version which is about 9 minutes. For more information about the story behind this piece in English and Chinese, one can read from her blog.

This piece has the character of 聲多韻少 more Sheng than Yun (which means more right hand plucking sound than left hand sliding and vibrato sound). Music before the Ming dynasty has this character. After the Ming, qin music has developed to be more Yun than Sheng.

Ralph Knag (US) -- Inspired by the Wise One
*the one peiyou adopt on the qin from the Jazz piece Wise one, from John Coltrane (1926-1967)

Sebastian (Austria) - Wenjun Cao  文君操 (Melody of Wenjun)
*from Ming dynasty handbook Feng Xuan Xuan Pin 鳳宣玄品 (1540). There's the lyrics which is the love story of Sima Xiangru courted to Zhuo Wenjun.

Stephen Dydo (US) - Yi Gu Ren 憶故人 (Memory of an Old Friend)
*This piece was composed around late Qing dynasty and was first shown in a publication of Shanghai Jin Yu Qin Society 今虞琴刊,  in 1936. It was inherited from Mr. Peng Qing-shou's family 彭慶壽祖傳秘譜.

We had friends from:
Budapest Hungary, Brazil, Austria, Ireland, the UK, Germany, and west coast and east coast of the US. Thank you for everyone's participation.

Since more and more friends have show interests to join the on-line yaji, we plan to run the next yaji by using Zoom. We also plan to do two different kinds of yaji. For the odd months (Jan, Mar, May, July, Sep, and Nov), we will have Guqin yaji, which mainly focus on the Guqin. For the even months (Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct, and Dec) we will have music and literature yaji for multi cultures. The next yaji will be on May 24, for the Guqin then.

After watching this video, I feel that I can add something more to my answer to Esmi's question regarding dapu... I found that just by doing it more and more, you can find your own judgement on how you want to play the piece  that you are reconstructing. You can first study pieces that have recordings from other qin masters, then start to do your own reconstruction that does not have a recording you can listen to. And just play it, experiment with it, and find a good rhythm you like, until you can play it from your heart.
